Construction Spurs Rodent Boom in Ventana Community.

South of Benbrook, neighbors in the Ventana Community are discovering an unexpected side effect of new development: a surge in rats and field mice.

From cats dragging home nightly “trophies” to traps catching dozens in just weeks, the evidence is clear that the rodent population has spiked.

Residents near fields off Jerry Dunn and Castle Peak report the critters slipping into garages, flower beds, and even attics.

One family claims their cat catches three or four a night, while others rely on traps baited with cheese or peanut butter. Some, without pets or traps, have simply found carcasses left in their yards.

The cause appears to be linked to construction in the Maverick and Ventana West neighborhoods. As acres of land are cleared, rodents are being pushed from their natural habitats into surrounding streets and backyards. Experts note this disruption will likely continue for three to five years as development expands.

For now, residents are swapping tips on traps and thanking their four-legged hunters for the assist. But one thing is certain, and it’s that the community is united in keeping a closer eye on what scurries through the night.
