Tuesday night’s rematch between the Benbrook Bobcats and Eastern Hills turned into another dramatic finish.
These two teams had already delivered a memorable game weeks earlier when Benbrook won in a shootout after goalkeeper Isaac Dons blocked the deciding penalty kick. The rematch followed a similar script.
The Highlanders entered the game 9–1 in the district and were sitting in first place. The Bobcats came in at 7–3, riding a four-game winning streak and looking to keep it going.
Both teams came out aggressively. The Highlanders scored first, but the Bobcats answered quickly when Sebas tied the game 1–1. Later, Evan Kramer added another goal for the Bobcats, sending the match to the end of regulation tied at 2–2.
Once again, it came down to penalty kicks.
Benbrook’s shooters delivered. Andy Herrill, Huddy Felker, Sebastiane Balandrán, Roberto Olono, and another Bobcat, Ixcoatl Rios-Tinoco, each converted to give Benbrook five successful attempts. Eastern Hills made four and stepped up for the final kick with the game on the line.
All eyes turned to Dons.
The Highlanders struck the ball hard, but Dons dove and blocked it. The ball bounced back toward the goal before Dons knocked it away with his head, sealing the shootout win and sending the Bobcat fans into celebration.
The Bobcats improve to 13–9 overall and 8–3 in district play, extending their winning streak to five games.
Next up is a road match on Friday against Young Men’s Leadership Academy. The Bobcats won the previous meeting 2–0 and will look to keep the streak alive.
