The Benbrook Bobcats packed a lot into four days at the Corpus Christi Baseball Tournament.
They opened strong Thursday morning with a 5-1 win over Los Fresnos, setting the tone with timely hitting and steady defense.
A few hours later, the momentum flipped. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial erupted for nine runs in the first inning and never slowed, handing the Bobcats a 20-3 loss.
Friday brought a gladly welcomed reset, though.
Against the Gregory Portland Wildcats, the Bobcats trailed early but chipped away. Gilulianno Martinez sparked the rally, and a five-run eighth inning sealed an 8 to 5 comeback win. Later that night, the Hutto Hippos capitalized on early Bobcat pitching struggles and pulled away for an 11-1 victory.
Saturdayโs finale against the Corpus Christi Moody Bearcats felt like a fitting close to a rollercoaster weekend.
Sebastian Martinez Colon delivered a strong five-inning start, striking out seven and allowing no earned runs. The Bobcats built a 5-1 lead, but the Bearcats answered late with a walk-off 6-5 win despite being out-hit by the Bobcats nine to seven. Bobcat Evan Smith led the offense with two hits and two runs batted in.
The Bobcats leave Corpus Christi at 2-3 in tournament play and 4-5 overall. It was not a perfect weekend, but it was revealing, showing the Bobcats can rally, respond, and compete deep into games.
The Bobcats return to action this week at the Drew Medford Tournament, looking to turn lessons learned into wins.
