The Benbrook Bobcats baseball team started district play with confidence and plenty of offense Tuesday night on the road against the Eastern Hills Highlanders.
The Bobcats wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Brennan Barton delivered an early hit that brought home two runs, and a wild pitch soon added two more as the Bobcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening inning.
The Highlanders answered with two runs, but the Bobcats continued to build momentum. Ethan Tucker added another key hit in the second inning to stretch the lead, and the offense kept producing in the third. A sacrifice fly from Sebastian Martinez Colon, a two-run double from Hudson Stockton, and another hit from Tucker pushed Benbrook ahead 10-2.
The Highlanders briefly fought back with three runs in the third, but the Bobcats never lost control of the game. The Bobcats added more runs in the fifth before putting the game out of reach with a huge sixth inning that produced 12 runs.
When the dust settled, the Bobcats claimed a 24-7 victory to open district play.
Stockton led the offense with five runs batted in, including a triple and a double. Tucker finished three for four at the plate, while Barton and Tanner Madara each added multiple hits. The Bobcats collected 12 hits overall and showed patience at the plate with 13 walks.
On the mound, Dan Stiefvater earned the win after pitching four innings and striking out four. Trentin Hornbeck followed with a scoreless inning of relief.
The win moves the Bobcats to 8-7-1 on the season and 1-0 in district play.
The Bobcats return home tonight to face Diamond Hill Jarvis at 7:00 p.m. at the Bobcat Baseball Diamond at Dutch Branch Park and Athletic Complex.
