BENBROOK, TX — If you’ve found yourself stuck in a line of honking cars or delayed by a passing train along RM 2871 between I-20 and US 377, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining it.
As neighborhoods like Whitestone, Skyline Ranch, Ventana, Bella, Canopy, and now the newly launching luxury gated community of Maverick continue to grow, this already congested two-lane corridor is becoming more and more of a headache for local residents and commuters.
The biggest pain point? Traffic jams and a rising number of car accidents, made worse by frequent delays at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing at Aledo Road, which can stall drivers during peak hours several times a day.

At a recent HOA meeting in Ventana, Fort Worth District 3 Councilman Michael Crain directly addressed the elephant on the road: RM 2871 simply isn’t built to handle the area’s explosive growth.
Crain encouraged residents to rally behind the proposed TxDOT project to widen RM 2871 into a four-lane divided road with a center median, improved intersections, pedestrian paths, and most importantly—an overpass over the UPRR and Aledo Road to eliminate the train-induced gridlock.
The proposal sounds promising. The problem? It’s not funded.
According to TxDOT, the projected cost of the full expansion is a hefty $267 million, and while virtual public meetings were held in 2020 and again in late 2023, the project remains unfunded and off the current construction schedule. Crain estimates the overpass alone could cost upwards of $30 million.
There is, however, a narrow on-ramp to progress. If enough residents make noise, RM 2871 could potentially be re-added to the 2026 Bond Program, with construction starting as early as 2027 or as late as 2030.
Residents are being urged to act now. That means reading up on the RM 2871 Fact Sheet, spreading awareness, and calling TxDOT at 817-370-6500—not once, but repeatedly—to push for the project’s return to the table.
The message is clear: silence won’t solve this. It’s time for Benbrook and its neighbors to get loud, stay consistent, and advocate for safer, smoother commutes for everyone traveling along RM 2871.
