On a quiet stretch across from First Baptist Church in Benbrook, a heartbreaking scene caught one resident’s eye.
A mother opossum was struck and left in a ditch, her tiny joeys still clinging to her. With no time to spare and no rehabber immediately on hand, the resident waded into the ditch and did what they could, managing to save a few of the surviving babies.
Four of the young opossums were delivered to a rehabber in Weatherford known as Possum World, run by Kay, a specialist in orphaned and injured marsupials. Sadly, not all of the babies made it, but a handful now have a fighting chance thanks to quick thinking and community care.
If you ever come across wildlife in need, Deer Creek Animal Hospital in Crowley is another local resource known for helping with small animal rehabilitation.
