A recent Fort Worth ISD leadership training retreat has sparked conversation online about transparency, funding, and how professional development opportunities are supported within the district.
According to FWISD Chief of Staff Dr. Louis Kushner, members of the district’s executive leadership team recently participated in a professional learning program in Lakeway focused on leadership practices, strategic planning, organizational effectiveness, and student outcomes.
Kushner stated that the training was funded with grant dollars from community partners and “did not utilize district operating funds.” He described the experience as an investment in strengthening the district’s ability to support schools, staff, students, and families.
The event drew scrutiny from FWISD Watchdog, a community accountability group, which questioned who provided the grant funding and called for additional transparency regarding the trip’s expenses. The group suggested that public records requests could provide further details about the funding source and related costs.
In response, Kushner publicly invited FWISD Watchdog and other community stakeholders to meet directly with district leadership.
“We certainly appreciate your feedback and relentless efforts to improve transparency,” Kushner wrote. “Please feel free to reach out to me directly either via email or phone, and perhaps we can sit down to solve issues collectively and collaboratively rather than via social media, where nothing gets solved.”
FWISD Watchdog responded positively to the invitation, expressing interest in a discussion involving community members and elected representatives. Kushner later reiterated his willingness to meet and noted that he has ongoing communication with stakeholders throughout the district.
The exchange highlights a broader conversation in public education, where community members increasingly want transparency in spending decisions, while district leaders emphasize the value of leadership development and professional training.
