Fort Worth ISD is entering the 2026-27 school year with new leadership at dozens of campuses following the Texas Education Agency’s takeover of the district and a wave of principal departures.
District leaders say the changes are part of a broader effort to improve student outcomes, particularly at campuses that have struggled academically for years. More than 30 schools have seen principal changes since Superintendent Peter Licata’s arrival, including several schools serving the Benbrook area, such as Rolling Hills Elementary, Western Hills High School, and Westpark Elementary.
While district officials view the turnover as an opportunity to bring fresh leadership and long-term stability, some education experts and parents have raised concerns about the impact frequent leadership changes can have on school culture, teacher retention, and student success.
FWISD leaders say the new appointments were made through a rigorous selection process and are intended to support the district’s lowest-performing campuses, many of which are part of the newly created Elevate Network.
The discussion highlights a larger question facing Fort Worth ISD: whether significant leadership changes can accelerate improvement while still maintaining the consistency schools need to thrive.
