By the end of a long day of questions, interviews, and evaluation, one Western Hills student walked away with more than just experience. He earned the chance to lead.
Mark Angel, a JROTC cadet at Western Hills High School, placed third overall in a districtwide leadership board held March 26, competing against eight top students selected from across Fort Worth ISD. The process was not simple. Thirteen senior JROTC instructors led a full day of testing that included a written exam and a detailed interview covering leadership, current issues, and real-world decision making.
Angel stood out for his composure and preparation, even delivering one response nearly word-for-word from the official reference standard. His performance earned him an appointment as Brigade Commander of 1st Brigade, a role that oversees several JROTC programs in the district.
While he did not take the top spot, the outcome still marks a significant step forward. The board is designed to challenge students beyond the classroom, placing them in high-pressure situations that test both knowledge and character.
For Western Hills, it is a moment of pride. For Angel, it is both an achievement and a starting point for what comes next in leadership.
