Benbrook Academics Win Sixth Straight District Title.

On a spring weekend filled with testing, writing, and competition, Benbrook Middle-High School once again finished at the top.

For the sixth consecutive year, Benbrook was named champion of the UIL 4A District 8 Academic Meet, with events held at Benbrook Middle-High School and South Hills High School. The title reflects a full team effort, with students placing across a wide range of events and several teams earning first place.

Students advancing or placing included:

  • In Accounting, Roberto Olono placed fifth.
  • In Calculator Applications, Abyela Patterson placed second, McKinzie Brookshier third, Abigail Estes fourth, and Ruth Walker contributed to a first-place team finish.
  • In Copy Editing, Ashley Gevedon took first, Colin Jarchow placed second, and Brady Ball finished fifth.
  • In Current Issues and Events, Kyle Lewis placed fourth and Sovina Tran sixth.
  • In Editorial Writing, Anabelle Russell earned first, and Skyla Roundy placed fourth. In Feature Writing, Magnolia Peterson placed second, Russell fourth, and Jack Gentry fifth. In Headline Writing, Madison Brookshier placed fourth and Roundy sixth.
  • In the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Kyle Lewis placed third, Sovina Tran fourth, and Kyler Parsons seventh.
  • In Literary Criticism, Amy Gonzalez took first, Jack Gentry second, Ashley Gevedon third, and Ella Freeman fourth, helping secure a first-place team finish.
  • In Mathematics, Jaxon Anderson placed fifth.
  • In News Writing, Jack Gentry took first, Russell placed second, and Peterson finished fifth. In Number Sense, Anderson earned first, Ball second, Gentry fourth, and Parker Dorff contributed to a first-place team.
  • In Persuasive Speaking, Bailey Lott earned first.
  • In Poetry Interpretation, Lori-Ann Goodson took first, and Hannah Colvin placed third. In Prose Interpretation, Daniel Washington placed second.
  • In Ready Writing, Gentry earned first, and Rylee Fallon placed second.
  • In Science, Emily Hassler placed sixth and earned top alternate in Biology, while May Carnegie earned top alternate in Chemistry.
  • In Social Studies, Colin Jarchow took first, while Kyle Lewis, Sovina Tran, and Evangelina Martinez combined for a first-place team finish.
  • In Spelling, Jarchow earned first, Gevedon second, Gentry third, and Anderson fourth, securing another first-place team.
  • The Speech Team and Journalism Team also finished first overall.

The program is led by UIL Coordinator David Koenig, with support from coaches Matthew Garcia in science, Tiffany Giddens in current issues and social studies, Jamie Krempa in speech and debate, Yenifer Morales in poetry and prose, Ryan Peterson in journalism and mathematics, Wade Veillon in literary criticism and ready writing, and Jared Spoon in accounting and spelling.

Students who placed in the top three and first-place teams will advance to regionals on April 23 and 24 in Lubbock.

For Benbrook, the streak continues, built not just on talent, but on consistency, preparation, and a community that values excellence both in and out of the classroom.
