FWISD UIL Realignment Raises Questions for Local Athletic Programs.

The University Interscholastic League’s newly released realignments are stirring concern across Fort Worth ISD, especially among families and coaches watching how enrollment numbers line up with competition levels.

According to an opinion piece from FWISD Watchdog, several FWISD football programs were moved to higher divisions despite enrollment figures that typically place them in lower divisions.

Schools such as Benbrook Middle High School, Diamond Hill Jarvis, Dunbar, and Western Hills were elevated to 4A Division 1 football, even though their enrollment numbers align more closely with Division 2. The same concern was raised for O. D. Wyatt and Polytechnic at the 5A level.

The shift means many FWISD schools will now regularly face opponents with significantly larger student populations, a challenge that often shows up in depth, size, and resources. While district-only alignment may help reduce travel costs and keep schedules closer to home, critics argue it comes at a competitive cost for smaller programs.

The realignment also places Kennedale as the lone non-FWISD school in Benbrook’s football district, while Brewer stands alone in the 5A grouping.

In other sports, Young Women’s Leadership Academy and Young Men’s Leadership Academy were both moved up a classification, a change expected to make their seasons more demanding.

With FWISD now largely competing within its own district across most sports, four schools per district will still advance to the playoffs. The concern raised is that early playoff exits may continue for many programs facing larger schools week after week.

Whether this alignment ultimately strengthens competition or places unnecessary strain on already challenged programs remains to be seen. For now, it is a conversation many Benbrook and Fort Worth families will be watching closely.
