If you live in Benbrook and have caught a whiff of rotten eggs, bleach, or even fish when turning on the tap, you are not alone.
Residents across town, from homes along 377 South to apartments near Ridglea Club Drive and businesses throughout the area, are reporting recurring water odors that come and go without warning.
Some describe a strong sulfur smell, others say it smells heavily chlorinated, and a few have noticed the odor showing up in restrooms, sinks, and even floor drains.
The issue does not seem limited to one neighborhood or type of property. Homeowners, apartment residents, restaurant workers, and shoppers have all shared similar experiences.
In some cases, the smell appears in both hot and cold water, ruling out simple fixes like replacing a water heater anode rod. Others point to drain traps that may need regular flushing, especially in commercial buildings, while others suspect broader water-treatment or infrastructure issues.
What makes the situation more frustrating is the lack of clear answers. Many residents say they have been bounced between property managers, maintenance teams, and city services, with no single source able to explain why the odor occurs or how to stop it permanently.
One thing most agree on is this. The issue needs attention, and attention starts with speaking up and taking action.
Residents are encouraging one another to call and email both the City of Benbrook and the Benbrook Water Authority at (817) 249-1250 to report when and where the smells are occurring. The more reports they receive, the easier it becomes to identify patterns and problem areas.
For now, the smells remain a mystery, but if your water smells off, PLEASE say something and take action to make it known. Remember, often the squeaky wheel really does get the fix.
