Young Anglers Learn More Than Fishing at Benbrook Lake Camp.

A fishing pole was just the beginning of the lesson this week at Benbrook Stables’ Fish Camp.

Over two days, Benbrook Stables’ campers traded screens for the outdoors as they learned the fundamentals of fishing, nature, and outdoor survival skills. Participants practiced casting techniques, explored the parts of a fishing pole, and discovered what belongs inside a well-stocked tackle box.

The learning continued at Benbrook Lake, where campers identified freshwater fish, discussed the best bait for different species, and spent time fishing from the pier while seeing firsthand how wind conditions can affect success on the water.

Beyond fishing, campers gained a broader appreciation for the outdoors. They learned how to use a compass, explored the concept of lateral drift, studied local ecosystems, and discovered how lake systems function. The camp also included hands-on lessons in finding natural materials and safely building a fire.

Programs like Fish Camp offer more than just a chance to catch a fish. They help young people build confidence, learn practical skills, and develop a deeper connection to the natural world around them.

Judging by the smiles and stories shared afterward, the biggest catch of the week may have been the memories made along the way.
