Western Hills High School soccer had a strong night on the field as both the junior varsity and varsity boys teams earned important district victories against Carter Riverside.
The junior varsity Cougars delivered a tight defensive performance and secured a 1-0 win. Hugo Montoya scored the lone goal of the match with a powerful strike just before halftime, marking his first goal of the season. The defense held firm the rest of the way to protect the lead.
With the victory, the JV team improved to 13-5 overall and 9-1 in district play, moving within reach of the District 7 4A title.
The varsity Cougars entered their match needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive, and they responded with one of their strongest performances of the season.
Freshman Elian Herrera created the opening opportunity in the second half with a well-placed pass that led to a penalty kick. Freshman Brayan Lรณpez stepped up and converted the attempt to give the Cougars the lead.
Later in the match, Yeferson Tovar added another highlight by chipping the ball over the goalkeeper to extend the advantage. Carter Riverside managed a late goal, but the Cougars held on for a 2-1 victory. The varsity team now stands at 8-11 overall and 4-7 in district play.
Both teams return to action Friday night on the road against Dunbar. The JV squad can secure the district championship with a win, while the varsity team faces a must-win match to keep its playoff hopes alive.
