Benbrook neighbors, here’s a meaningful way to spend June 19. Volunteers are needed for this year’s Opal’s Walk for Freedom in Fort Worth, an annual Juneteenth event that celebrates the legacy of Dr. Opal Lee and her decades-long fight for equality.
The walk began as a bold campaign to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Thanks to Dr. Lee’s determination and nationwide support, that dream came true in 2021. Now, the event draws thousands each year to continue her mission of dignity and justice for all.
Local nonprofit Unity Unlimited Inc. organizes the walk and is looking for hands-on help to make this year’s event run smoothly. If you’ve ever wanted to honor Black history with more than a post, this is your chance to show up.
You can also order the updated edition of Juneteenth: A Children’s Story, Ms. Opal’s beautifully illustrated book that now includes the historic moment Juneteenth became a national holiday.
