Varnell Runs for Benbrook City Council with a Heart for Service.

When it comes to community service, Derrick Varnell is no stranger to rolling up his sleeves.

For years, he has dedicated his time and energy to organizations that prioritize people, from international missions to local PTAs. Now, he is turning that same servant-leadership spirit toward the Benbrook City Council.

For the past eight years, Varnell has volunteered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and delivers beds to children without one of their own. He describes the joy of seeing a child’s face light up when they receive their first bed as one of the most rewarding experiences of his life.

Beyond SHP, his service extends to board roles with Meade International, MANNA Worldwide, and Mosaic Academy Fort Worth, in addition to countless hours supporting PTAs.

Varnell says his decision to run for City Council comes from a desire to represent all of Benbrook and to strengthen neighborhoods by listening, leading, and serving. He hopes to bring the same humility and dedication he has shown in his nonprofit work into city leadership.

The campaign message is clear: leadership is not about titles, but about service.
