TCU has restored the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s athletic credentials after revoking them over reporting on a locker-room altercation.
The dispute began after the newspaper reported on an incident involving TCU football players Dozie Ezukanma and Jacob Fields.
Further reporting revealed Ezukanma was hospitalized for three days with a brain bleed and concussion after Fields allegedly punched and kicked him.
Fields now faces an aggravated-assault charge.
Rather than quieting the story, TCU’s decision to revoke credentials created a separate controversy over press freedom.
On Friday, TCU said “productive discussions” with the Star-Telegram led both sides to “move forward.”
The university did not apologize for revoking the credentials but reaffirmed the newspaper as an independent community news source.
Reporter Steven Johnson can now resume credentialed coverage of TCU Athletics.
The episode offered a familiar lesson: You can restrict a reporter’s access, but you can’t stop the reporting.
