The lights are bright and the stakes are high in Austin as the UIL State Wrestling Championships get underway, and Benbrook has a reason to watch closely.
Benbrook Middle High School state qualifier Mac Shafer stepped onto the mat Friday morning ready for the moment. In Round 1 of the state tournament, Shafer closed out the first period with a 3 to 0 lead, setting the tone early in his opening match.
State is a different stage. It brings together the best wrestlers in Texas, all battling for a spot on the podium. For Shafer, just reaching this level is a testament to months of discipline, early practices, and hard fought district and regional rounds. Now he is competing against the top talent in the state with the Bobcat community behind him.
