A bit of Benbrook history has resurfaced thanks to longtime resident Steve Metcalf, who recently rediscovered a 1953 yearbook titled The Bulldog. Inside were memories of the original Benbrook School, which served grades 1 through 8.
The school once stood near what is now the Weatherford building on Winscott Road. Although the structure has been added to and repainted over the years, its distinctive curved rockwork can still be spotted from the street, offering a nostalgic reminder of Benbrook’s early days in education.
The yearbook also included an architectural drawing of the proposed Benbrook Elementary School by architect Nerman G. Cox, whose construction contract was awarded in February 1953. Fifteen years later, the Metcalf family moved to Benbrook, enrolling their children at the very campus that helped shape generations of students.
For those curious about the town’s early landmarks, longtime residents recall that the old Benbrook City Hall, Police, and Fire Department once stood just off Highway 377, near today’s Waffle House—a hub of civic life in mid-century Benbrook.
The discovery of The Bulldog 1953 offers a heartfelt reminder of how far the community has come, while still honoring the foundation that helped make Benbrook the close-knit city it is today.
