Metal and Nail Debris Triggers Chain of Blowouts on I-20 Through Benbrook.

What started as a routine Saturday drive turned into a frustrating evening for dozens of Benbrook-area motorists.

Just after 5 pm, drivers traveling eastbound on I-20 near the Winscott Road exit began pulling over with blown tires. Within minutes, the shoulder filled with disabled vehicles as police, tow trucks, and roadside crews stretched from Winscott toward Bryant Irvin, working to keep drivers safe and traffic moving.

As reports spread across social media, residents quickly warned others to avoid the area and take alternate routes. Some suggested exiting at 377, heading north to the roundabout, then cutting east on 183 to rejoin I-20 near Hulen Street. That route helped many avoid the worst of the damage, though unrelated debris later caused a separate incident near the 377 traffic circle.

Early theories ranged from unsecured cargo to intentional placement. Clarity finally came when dashcam footage shared by a local driver showed a large piece of metal spinning across the roadway as vehicles struck it, sending debris into traffic.

Cleanup crews later confirmed a dangerous mix of metal and multiple boxes of roofing nails, identified by the colored plastic washers scattered across the road.

Damage varied widely. Some drivers escaped with a single flat. Others reported multiple blown tires, undercarriage damage, or torn bumpers. A few residents woke up Sunday morning to tires that had slowly deflated overnight after passing through the area earlier in the day.

The roadway was fully cleared and reopened shortly before 9 pm Saturday.

Authorities urge anyone who drove through the eastbound lanes of I-20 near Winscott to carefully inspect all tires, wheels, and the underside of the vehicle.

For drivers asking how incidents like this get documented, the driver graciously provided a link to the GKU dashcam that captured the moment of impact with debris.

While traffic is flowing normally again, the incident was an unwelcome reminder of how quickly a standard drive can turn costly.

As we end one year and start a new year, residents are encouraged to stay alert, secure loads properly, and report roadway hazards as soon as possible.
