With early voting beginning Monday, October 20, Benbrook residents can shape their community’s future by electing new city council members for Places 3, 5, and 7.
Thanks to Kristen Melton and the Hills of Whitestone Homeowners Association, residents can get an inside look at where each candidate stands through a comprehensive candidate questionnaire distributed to all participants.
The first part of this two-part series covers two major issues: Fiscal Responsibility and Growth & Developmentโtopics that directly affect how Benbrook balances small-town charm with future progress.
Fiscal Responsibility
Candidates agreed that transparency and long-term planning are key to keeping Benbrook financially strong. Incumbents pointed to disciplined budgeting and a reduction in the property tax rate in recent years, while challengers emphasized collaboration, strategic spending, and ensuring residents understand how every tax dollar is used. Across the board, priorities include maintaining quality public services like safety, parks, and infrastructure without burdening taxpayers with unnecessary debt.
Growth & Development
Managing Benbrookโs growth while protecting its small-town character was a common theme. With limited land left to develop, candidates discussed preserving green spaces, preventing floodplain development, and maintaining the cityโs family-friendly appeal. Many also stressed the importance of supporting local businesses, responsible zoning, and ensuring future projects align with the cityโs Comprehensive Plan.
Each response showed a shared desire to protect what makes Benbrook specialโits close-knit community feelโwhile ensuring smart, sustainable growth that serves both current and future residents.
