Tonight, June 27, the night sky above Benbrook might put on an unexpectedly stunning show.
The June Boötids Meteor Shower is set to peak, and though it’s one of the quieter meteor showers most years, it has a reputation for surprise. Some years bring just a few streaks. Others? Up to 100 meteors an hour.
The Boötids appear to shoot out from the Boötes constellation, near the Big Dipper. You don’t need any fancy gear to see them — just your eyes, a clear sky, and some patience. The best view? Around midnight. Find a dark spot away from city lights, let your eyes adjust, and look up.
What makes this year special is the low moonlight, which means better visibility and a better chance at catching this unpredictable light show. The meteors are slow, making them easier to spot and enjoy.
So grab a blanket, find a quiet spot, and take in one of nature’s quieter, more mysterious sky shows. The Boötids don’t always show off, but when they do, it’s worth the wait.
