Strange Lights Over Benbrook? Turns Out, It Wasn’t Aliens.

Last week, some Benbrook residents got a surprise in the sky. And no, it wasn’t an alien invasion.

Around 8:40 p.m. on May 22, people from Lake Worth to White Settlement spotted glowing orange orbs floating through the sky. Descriptions poured into social media. Some said they looked like flying fire. Others guessed oversized fireflies, fighter jets, or even drones chasing storms.

One person said it reminded them of a hot air balloon flame floating solo. Another thought it might be an airplane reflecting sunlight or weather balloons catching the last bit of daylight. Some chalked it up to satellites or afterburners. A few remembered similar sightings in other parts of the area in recent years.

But the mystery didn’t last long. A few folks with eyes on the ground cleared it up. Turns out, the floating lights were Chinese lanterns launched during a special end-of-year “passing the torch” ceremony at Trinity Basin Preparatory in White Settlement. The celebration had seniors sending up lanterns as a symbolic handoff to the juniors.

So no UFOs this time, Benbrook. Just a sweet moment marked by glowing lanterns drifting through the night sky.
