Is Toys “R” Us Making a Comeback?

The toy giant that defined childhood for generations is back, but with a twist.

Toys “R” Us has announced plans to open 30 new stores nationwide by the end of the year, including several in Texas. Among them are new locations at Grapevine Mills and South Plains Mall in Lubbock, both already open, with another coming soon to North Star Mall in San Antonio.

Once a cornerstone of holiday shopping, the revived Toys “R” Us is taking a more modest approach this time. The company, now owned by WHP Global, is blending flagship stores with smaller seasonal pop-up locations—some inside airports and shopping centers—to reconnect with customers during the busy holiday season.

Locals who remember the sprawling aisles of the original stores might find these new shops a bit different. Shoppers can expect smaller footprints and a curated mix of toys, collectibles, and trending gifts designed for quick visits rather than all-day browsing.

Whether this marks a true return of the beloved brand or a nostalgic nod to its past remains to be seen. For now, fans of Geoffrey the Giraffe can catch a bit of that childhood magic at Grapevine Mills and other select locations across Texas.
