To help families enjoy the holidays without worry, the department shared five easy tips to keep homes safe:

1. Skip the candles near the tree. A surprising number of tree fires start this way.
2. Use approved lights and plug them in properly. Look for UL-certified lights and avoid piling too many extension cords on top of one another.
3. Check your lights and decorations before you hang them. Cracked wires, brittle plugs, or missing insulation can be dangerous. Toss anything that looks damaged.
4. Watch your pets. Curious paws can chew through cords or bump a tree off balance. A quick check now and then helps prevent mishaps.
5. Choose the right spot for your tree. Please keep it away from heat sources, stairways, and exits to keep it safe and out of the way.
