Derrick Varnell Brings Education Advocacy to Benbrook City Council Race.

As Benbrook prepares for upcoming elections, residents are getting to know the candidates vying for City Council Place 7. Among them is Derrick Varnell, a longtime advocate for education and parental involvement in schools.

Varnell’s commitment to education is personal. His wife, Cara, teaches third grade in Fort Worth ISD, and his own children attended public schools. Over the past two decades, he has served in multiple PTA leadership roles, including Treasurer and Vice President of Finance and Budget, and spent four years on the FWISD Council of PTAs. These experiences, he says, demonstrate how strong communities and engaged parents can shape brighter futures for students.

While his background is rooted in public schools, Varnell stresses his respect for all educational choices, from private and charter schools to homeschooling. What matters most, he believes, is that parents stay involved — whether through PTA membership, volunteering, or supporting extracurricular activities.

For Varnell, the foundation of a thriving community begins with education. He argues that empowered parents and strong schools build not only successful students but also a stronger Benbrook.
