Western Hills came within one score of its first win Friday night, battling Pecos to the finish at Big Spring High School.
Coming off last week’s 44-13 loss to Burkburnett, the Cougars fell behind 10-0 before quarterback Tyler Johnston connected with Gabriel Christion on a 47-yard screen pass for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 10-7 in the second quarter.
Pecos stretched its lead to 13-7, but Western Hills answered in the fourth, marching down the field for a Ashton Richardson touchdown and taking its first lead, 14-13.
The lead didn’t hold. Pecos responded with the go-ahead touchdown and held on for the 20-14 win.
Western Hills drops to 0-2, but Friday’s effort was a much closer fight than the opener and put the Cougars within reach of their first win.
They’ll get another shot Friday at 7 p.m. against North Side at Farrington Field.
