Ed Sproles is among the fascinating people who make up the rich history of Benbrook, TX. Sproles was elected Mayor of the newly incorporated Benbrook in 1947.
But being the first mayor in Benbrook’s history is only one of many accomplishments attributed to Sproles. He was an excellent cattle rancher, a successful businessman (he was President of Texas Motor Truck Transport Company), and a long-time public servant (he also served on the school board for the Benbrook Common School District).
Sproles constructed a house in 1935 at the corner of 377, and the road now bears his name, Sproles Drive. The impressive structure was the centerpiece of Sproles’s large cattle ranch. Though most of what was the Sproles ranch now sits beneath Benbrook Lake, the homestead remains.
The Sproles House, once used to host the earliest Benbrook City Council meetings, was restored by Benbrookโs current Mayor, Dr. Jerry Dittrich. According to โBenbrook โ Images of America,โ the home once stood at the intersection of 377 and Sproles Dr. but was relocated about 300 feet east in 2008. Mayor Dittrich and his wife won Historic Preservation Council Tarrant County Pedestal Award in 1996 for their incredible preservation of the house.
Today, passersby notice the meticulously kept lawn and beautiful brickwork on the eye-catching home.
