The UIL State Wrestling Championships are a different kind of test. The competition is deeper, the margins thinner, and one mistake can change everything. Benbrook sent student-athletes into that environment this year, and they held their own.
At 5A 157, Mac Shafer stepped into the championship bracket and came out strong, finishing the first period of Round 1 with a 3-0 lead.
In the consolation bracket, he earned an 11-5 decision over Caiden Melott of Prosper Walnut Grove before dropping a close 7-4 match to Blake Brigance of Frisco Wakeland. It was a tough finish, but it capped a season that included more than 40 wins and another appearance on the state stage.
At 5A 165, Desmond Chambers drew a challenging path against experienced opponents. He fell in the consolation round to Julio Velo of Frisco Liberty by fall, and he had earlier lost to Jorge Montes of McAllen Memorial.
Still, simply reaching state places a wrestler among the best in Texas, and Chambers’ season reflects the steady work that got him there.
On the girls’ side, Bailey Lott competed at the UIL Region 1-5A tournament in the 135-pound class earlier this month, where she placed sixth. She picked up wins over Ellinore Schmitz of Springtown and Layla Ortiz of Hereford before falling in the consolation semifinal and the fifth-place match.
Her performance continues to strengthen Benbrook’s growing girls’ program.

State wrestling is demanding, yet it can be quite rewarding if one prepares and conditions well. Benbrook’s student athletes showed up ready, and that alone speaks to the program’s trajectory towards future podium moments.
