Benbrook’s Cougar tennis squad showed up strong and determined last week at the 8-4A District Tournament, facing off against schools like Diamond Hill-Jarvis, Southwest, Eastern Hills, Carter-Riverside, and Benbrook Middle High School.
While not every match went their way, Cougar Nation walked away with wins, pride, and a ticket to regionals for four standout players.
The girls doubles bracket lit up with an intense Cougar-vs.-Cougar showdown as juniors Vianet Garcia and Jessica Hernandez went head-to-head against their own teammates for third place. Even in a narrow loss, the win was bittersweet—they’d already eliminated Benbrook Middle’s No. 2 team from the top three. That’s a power move with major implications for next year’s momentum.
On the boys’ side, seniors Jesus Alvizo and Erick Perez tore through their bracket, finishing with just one loss and locking in second place. Their grit paid off—they’re headed to the regional championships in Lubbock.
Joining them are seniors Jacqueline Mares and Elaina Montalvo, who fought through one of the most grueling matchups in recent Cougar memory to claim second in girls doubles and punch their own ticket to regionals.
From fierce rallies to all-out heart, the Cougars proved they’re a force on the court. Wish your regional-bound players good luck as they take their game to Lubbock. Cougar tennis isn’t done yet.
