Fort Worth ISD is rolling out a major change to its 17 traditional middle schools by doubling class time for English and math through a new block schedule.
Starting next school year, students will spend 90 minutes per day in these core subjects—up from the current 45 minutes—to address consistently low academic performance since 2021.
The district says the change will allow for deeper learning and better support for students at all levels. Campuses will have some flexibility in implementation, and the district plans to hire up to 21 new teachers to support the shift. Regular assessments every six weeks will track whether the new schedule is delivering results.
While some students may lose an elective, district leaders say the focus on literacy and math is essential to turn things around and compete with higher-performing districts across Texas.
