The conversation over South Benbrook’s floodplain isn’t fading. If anything, it’s growing louder.
In a recent post to the Stop South Benbrook Floods Facebook page, resident Greg Clem argued that Benbrook once had city ordinances and a 2020 Comprehensive Plan intended to protect the floodplain. He believes those protections were set aside, resulting in the loss of open space that served as both a natural flood buffer and a community resource.
Clem contends the issue is no longer simply about development. Instead, he says it is about whether City officials followed their own ordinances or granted exceptions without the required public process. He called for construction to pause until those questions are resolved.
His comments prompted an active discussion. Many residents shared concerns about the loss of wildlife habitat, open space, and public trust.
Others pointed to recent City Council workshop discussions, crediting council members Ryan Reagan and Sean Moore with pressing for answers and greater scrutiny of floodplain policies.
As the debate continues, many residents are asking not only what decisions were made but also how they were made. This continued conversation has become as much about transparency and accountability as it is about the future of the floodplain itself.
