Carols by Candlelight Fills TCU’s Robert Carr Chapel with a Night of Hope and Harmony.

Texas Christian University marked another year of its long-standing tradition as the Student Affairs Religious and Spiritual Life Office hosted Carols by Candlelight on December 8 inside the historic Robert Carr Chapel.

Since 1966, this gathering has been a staple for the TCU community, and last night proved why it continues to draw a whole house.

The chapel was packed, with people standing along the walls as students, faculty, families, and community members came together for a night shaped by worship and anticipation. The service moved through Scripture readings from Luke, Matthew, and John while the Advent candles of hope, peace, joy, and love were lit one by one.

Music carried the night. The room lifted with familiar carols such as O Come, O Come Emmanuel, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger, Angels We Have Heard on High, Silent Night, and Joy to the World.

University vocal groups added rich layers to the program, along with expressive dance that helped retell the Christmas story in fresh and personal ways. Word of Truth’s stirring performance of O Holy Night drew one of the strongest responses of the evening as the room rose to its feet.

The most shared moment came at the end, when the Christ Candle was lit, and its flame passed from person to person until the entire chapel glowed. With candles raised, voices joined together for Joy to the World, filling the sanctuary with warmth and a sense of togetherness.

As students head into finals and the campus prepares for winter break, the night offered a grounding pause and a reminder of the season’s hope. Outside the chapel, guests lingered with cookies, hot chocolate, and the kind of simple joy that makes this tradition a highlight every December.
