If you have noticed crews, equipment, and holes being dug around Jerry Dunn Parkway and Orchard Way, the work appears to be related to underground utility installation.
Crews are using a process called horizontal directional drilling, or HDD. Rather than digging a long trench through the area, workers create access points and drill underground between them. They can then pull conduit through the path for utility lines.
The work appears to be for new fiber infrastructure, although the provider has not been confirmed.
For nearby residents, that explains the equipment and digging without the much larger mess of opening a continuous trench along the roadway.
