Last night’s Benbrook City Council meeting drew one of the largest turnouts the city has ever seen, and it ended with a decision that will be remembered for years.
The council voted unanimously to deny the Rowan Ranch Development Project’s request to rezone Mary’s Creek, a floodplain in North Benbrook that residents have been fighting to protect.
Supporters of Saving Mary’s Creek showed up in force, with 66 residents speaking against the project compared to just five who spoke in favor. The packed council chambers reflected the community’s deep concern for preserving the creek.
The denial marks a historic moment. In Benbrook’s history, the City Council has never overturned a unanimous recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission. On August 21, that precedent changed.
Residents celebrated the outcome, crediting grassroots efforts, petitions, and public pressure for tipping the scales. Leaders in the movement urged neighbors to stay engaged, reminding everyone that developers can reapply in 12 months.

North Benbrook residents demonstrated that their voices matter and that community action can shape the future. This was more than a meeting. It was a defining moment for a neighborhood that stood together and won.
