A tragic accident Thursday night claimed the life of a Lewisville firefighter and has rippled across North Texas, including here in Benbrook.
The crash occurred on the eastbound I-30 on-ramp from Camp Bowie, northwest of Benbrook, where a motorcycle accident took one life. Fort Worth police have released limited details as the investigation continues.
The fallen firefighter has been identified as Michael Swope of the Lewisville Fire Department. Those who knew him describe a man with a big personality, quick wit, and an even bigger heart.
Within the department, Swope served as a firefighter, paramedic, and Field Training Officer. He was known for mentoring younger firefighters and taking pride in serving his community. Outside of work, he was a devoted husband and father whose family was central to his life.

As the Swope family faces an unthinkable loss during the holiday season, the Lewisville Fire Fighters Foundation is asking the public to help support them in the days ahead. Donations will go directly toward assisting Swope’s wife and children, helping ease financial stress so they can focus on grieving and healing together.
Those who wish to contribute can do so through the fundraiser Standing With The Swope Family at https://helpahero.com/campaign/standing-with-the-swope-family.
For many first responders, this loss is a reminder that the brotherhood and sisterhood of the fire service extends far beyond city lines. When one family hurts, the entire community feels it.
