By the end of the first inning, it was clear this one was not going to stay close for long.
With first place in district on the line, the Benbrook Lady Bobcats hosted rival Western Hills Lady Cougars on the final day of March in front of a packed home crowd on Teacher Appreciation night.
Both teams came in hot, the Lady Bobcats undefeated in district at 8-0, and the Lady Cougars close behind at 6-1.
After a brief, shaky start in the circle, junior Natalya Muzquiz settled in and kept the Lady Cougars scoreless early. That was all the time the Lady Bobcats’ offense needed.
The Lady Bobcats broke the game open in the first inning, scoring eight runs on a string of hits that set the tone. They followed it up with an even bigger second inning, adding 13 more runs and building a 21-0 lead before the Lady Cougars could respond.
The Lady Cougars pushed across three runs later in the game, but the early surge proved too much to overcome.
Muzquiz finished with four strikeouts over three innings, while the Bobcats’ lineup piled up 16 hits and ran aggressively on the bases.
Esperanza Garza led the way with four RBIs on three hits, including a key double. Muzquiz and Madison Canada also drove in four runs each, while multiple players contributed to a lineup that stayed active from top to bottom.
The 21-3 win moves the Lady Bobcats to 9-0 in district and firmly in first place. The Lady Cougars drop to 6-2 and remain in second.
The Lady Bobcats heads to Eastern Hills Lady Highlanders next, while Lady Cougars travel to Carter-Riverside Lady Eagles, both looking to build on what is shaping up to be a competitive finish to district play.
