Homegrown Tomatoes on the Way at Roots & Shoots of Benbrook.

Fresh tomatoes may soon be making their way from the garden to the community.

While this year’s growing season has slowed down in some areas, Roots & Shoots of Benbrook says several tomato plants are producing well, with homegrown tomatoes expected to be available for pickup soon. Organizers encourage residents to take what they need and leave some for others when the harvest is ready.

The garden is also seeing progress elsewhere. Lettuce has been replanted and is expected to be ready in about 45 days, while green beans continue to grow despite limited trellis space this season. Looking ahead, the group has added 22 fruit trees and bushes, raising hopes for an even larger harvest next year.

Along the way, community support has helped keep the project moving forward. Roots & Shoots gave special thanks to Driven by Jen for helping to clean, mow, and trim the garden, and to Northern Custom Hardwoods for assisting with improvements to the walkways.

It’s another reminder that community gardens grow more than food. They grow partnerships, friendships, and opportunities to share the harvest with neighbors. For now, tomato lovers may want to keep an eye out. Fresh-picked season is almost here.
