A windy post-Christmas evening and morning, as temperatures dropped late Sunday evening into Monday, turned into an unexpected neighborhood cleanup on Johnson Street and many more across Benbrook, and it came with a simple reminder for all of Benbrook.
After stepping outside, one resident found wrapping paper, bows, gift boxes, Styrofoam, and loose trash scattered across the street. A tipped-over garbage can up the road appeared to be the source, with debris traveling downhill and piling up fast. One full black trash bag was filled before the mess even rounded the corner.
The cleanup took time and energy, especially for a neighbor who stepped in quietly to help without calling anyone out. The message was not about blame. It was about awareness.
With holiday waste piling up and winter winds picking up, unsecured trash cans can quickly turn into neighborhood-wide litter. Weighing down cans, bagging lighter items, and double-checking lids can make a big difference.
If you have not already, take a moment to check your trash cans today. A little extra effort can save your neighbors a lot of cleanup and keep Benbrook looking like the community we all care about.
