Drivers heading east on Interstate 30 near Chapel Creek Road were caught in standstill traffic Friday night after flash flooding swept across the highway, temporarily shutting down lanes and bringing vehicles to a complete stop.
The incident began around 9:15 p.m. when motorists initially believed a wreck was causing the gridlock. It was later confirmed that heavy rain and runoff from nearby construction had pushed mud and debris across the roadway, creating hazardous conditions and halting traffic for nearly an hour.
By about 10:15 p.m., crews managed to reopen the lanes after clearing the flooded area and ensuring it was safe for travel. Drivers who had been stranded reported water pooling across multiple lanes and construction dirt covering portions of the highway surface.
Officials are reminding motorists to remain cautious during severe weather, avoid driving through standing water, and use alternate routes when flash flooding occurs.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available from local authorities.
