Cougar Pride Fights Hunger in Las Vegas Trail Community.3

At Western Hills High School, the spirit of Cougar Pride extends far beyond the classroom. Thanks to alumni and community support, the school’s on-campus food pantry, Cougar Corner, is helping fight food insecurity for students and families across the Las Vegas Trail area—one bag at a time.

What began nine years ago with a small effort to provide meals for student-athletes has grown into a vital resource for the community. Cougar Corner now serves students three days a week, offering food, hygiene items, and clothing. Families can also take home food bags, and the program’s reach has expanded to nearby campuses, including Leonard Middle School, Western Hills Elementary and Primary, Waverly Park, and Luella Merrett Elementary.

The growing demand reflects a larger reality in the area. With more than 7,700 residents relying on SNAP benefits, organizations like LVTRise and Cougar Corner have seen an increase in families seeking help. Last month alone, Cougar Corner distributed 15 food bags—more than seven times their usual amount.

Despite the rising need, the sense of community is stronger than ever. Alumni, local partners, and volunteers are rallying behind students to ensure that no child goes hungry and that families have the support they need to thrive.
