Benbrook residents may notice white SUVs with flashing lights slowly traveling neighborhood streets and alleys overnight. According to the City of Benbrook, the activity is part of an Atmos Energy natural gas safety survey.
Atmos Energy and its contractors will use mobile leak-detection equipment to monitor the city’s natural gas distribution system and map possible methane plumes. Survey vehicles may carry an Atmos Energy logo or be marked โUtility Contractor.โ
The work will take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., when crews can conduct more accurate surveys with less traffic and other interference. City officials and first responders have been notified.
If crews detect a leak, they will investigate and determine its severity. Atmos says hazardous Grade 1 leaks require immediate action, while Grade 2 and Grade 3 leaks are monitored and scheduled for repair according to state and federal guidelines.
Residents who smell natural gas should leave the area immediately and, from a safe location, call 911 and Atmos Energyโs emergency line at 866-322-8667.
