Phillips Talks Benbrook, Family, Service, and Future.

Over coffee at a Benbrook favorite, Black Rifle Coffee, Dustin Phillips recently talked about the city his family has called home for 16 years.

Phillips grew up in Amarillo and came to DFW for college before settling in Benbrook with his wife, Marisa, in 2009. They have since raised their two children here, and as Benbrook became home, Phillips wanted to play a greater role in its future.

That desire also reflected the work he was already doing professionally. As co-founder, president, and CEO of Opportunity Resource Services, a nonprofit focused on education and economic opportunity, Phillips had built much of his career around problem-solving and helping communities.

In 2018, he took that interest in service closer to home and was elected to Benbrook City Council. Nearly eight years later, Phillips represents Place 4 and is seeking another term this November.

Phillips said he first ran for council because he wanted younger families to have a voice and every neighborhood to feel represented. Nearly eight years later, he has watched Benbrook continue to grow, from the U.S. 377 brick wall and modernized police facility to park improvements taking shape across the city.

Yet some of the work Phillips values most is the part residents may never see. He described the research, listening and conversations that happen long before a council vote, especially when reaching common ground is difficult.

He says the process has strengthened his commitment to practical leadership, fiscal responsibility, and treating people with respect, even when they disagree. And after nearly eight years on council, Phillips believes he can still contribute to leaving Benbrook better than he found it.
