Benbrook Student Raises Concerns Over Classroom Practices.

A Benbrook Middle-High School student is asking adults to listen to what students are experiencing inside the classroom.

In an anonymous message shared by FWISD Watchdog, the student raised concerns about curriculum and teaching practices they said are being used at Benbrook Middle-High School, including student grouping, scripted lessons, and strict instructional timelines.

One concern centers on DOLs and what the student described as LEAD groups, in which students are placed into Learning, Established, and Advanced groups based on performance.

The student said the practice can make academic differences among classmates feel public, particularly when students are asked to grade another student’s DOL and then tell that classmate which group to join.

“Students should not feel embarrassed because of the academic group they are placed into,” the student wrote.

The message also questions how much flexibility teachers have in the classroom.

According to the student, teachers are provided scripts for presenting lessons and specific timeframes for completing portions of instruction. The student argued that those limits can make it harder for teachers to adjust lessons, answer questions naturally or spend additional time on material students have not yet understood.

The student was careful not to blame teachers.

“Many of our teachers are doing their best within the system they are being required to follow,” the student wrote. “My concern is with the system itself and how it affects students and teachers in the classroom.”

The student asked that the concerns be examined and requested anonymity.

FWISD Watchdog shared the message while criticizing the district’s current direction and calling on Fort Worth ISD Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata, Board of Managers President Pete Geren, and Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath to hear what the student is saying.

The student’s account represents one student’s reported experience and does not, by itself, establish how broadly these practices are used at Benbrook Middle-High School or whether Fort Worth ISD or the Texas Education Agency requires each practice.

Still, it puts a student voice into a larger conversation about what instruction looks and feels like from the other side of the desk.
