Parents Urged to Talk E-Bike Safety With Young Riders.

As e-bikes become more common across North Texas neighborhoods, law enforcement agencies are sounding the alarm about a growing number of dangerous incidents involving young riders who are ignoring traffic laws, riding recklessly, and, in some cases, attempting to flee from police.

Officials say the concern is no longer just about fun rides around the neighborhood. Many of today’s e-bikes can reach high speeds, posing serious risks to riders, drivers, and pedestrians when safety rules are ignored.

Authorities are encouraging parents in Benbrook and surrounding communities to become more involved by understanding what type of vehicle their child is riding, where they are riding, and whether they know the rules of the road.

Among the reminders shared by police:

  • Texas law requires Class 3 e-bike riders to be at least 15 years old
  • Riders under 16 should wear helmets
  • E-bikes on trails should remain under 15 mph
  • Wearing headphones or earbuds while riding can create dangerous distractions
  • E-motorcycles are treated differently under state law and require registration and a Class M license

Police also emphasized that fleeing from officers on an e-bike is not considered harmless and can result in serious criminal charges under Texas law.

After months of focusing on education and warnings, departments across the region say enforcement efforts are expected to increase as unsafe riding continues.
