Should Benbrook Move Its Fireworks Tradition?

What started with a simple thought from a longtime Benbrook resident has sparked a conversation amongst many residents.

The topic of choice: Benbrook’s Christmas Fireworks Show. Every December, the resident expressed that fireworks surprise pets, spark police calls, and send some dogs running into the oblivion of darkness, and, in some cases, never to return.

So, per the resident, why not move the show to the Fourth of July, when fireworks are expected, so families don’t have to leave town to see them?

Well, the responses from across the community did roll in, and it didn’t take long. For many, the Christmas fireworks are not just an event. They are a tradition. One that feels uniquely Benbrook.

People shared memories of cold nights and bundled kids, Santa rolling in on a fire truck, the tree lighting, and a fireworks finale that rivals anything they see all year.

Several pointed out that July already offers plenty of nearby shows. December, they said, is different. It is special.

Others acknowledged the concern but noted the event is well-publicized every year. Because of this, pet owners were encouraged to plan ahead, keep dogs inside, use calming treats, or simply know what to expect.

Still, others introduced adding a July Fourth celebration instead of replacing Christmas, or even exploring quieter drone shows.

But no matter how you slice this discussion of the Christmas Fireworks Show in Benbrook, changing a decades-long tradition would disappoint far more people than it would help.

In the end, this was less about fireworks and seemed to be more about the identity of a growing Benbrook. Benbrook is a place where traditions matter. And that first Saturday in December has become part of the city’s rhythm and tradition, a matter that means the world to many in Benbrook.

And for now, most folks are not ready to let it go and will continue to hold it close to their hearts, as Benbrook has always done.
