The Unusual Call, Seeking One Large, Hungry Rat Snake.

A Benbrook-area resident has taken a creative turn in the ongoing battle against barn rats.

After years of enjoying a pest-free property thanks to a six-foot rat snake that quietly kept the barn in check, the homeowner says the natural pest control has vanished. The rats have returned, and nothing else has worked.

So they’re asking the community for a very specific kind of help.

If anyone comes across a rat snake, the homeowner is offering to pick it up and give it a new job as the barn’s resident rodent manager. They’re urging neighbors not to harm the nonvenomous snakes, which are common in North Texas and known for keeping barns, sheds, and feed areas free of mice and rats.

Several locals chimed in with ideas, ranging from barn cats and heat-friendly snake shelters to reaching out to animal control for possible relocations. Others noted that predators like coyotes, bobcats, owls, and hawks make it hard to keep outdoor cats alive long enough to control a growing rodent population.

Rat snakes remain one of the most effective natural solutions, and the search highlights a very real rural challenge: balancing wildlife, pets, and pests in wide-open spaces.

If you catch a rat snake and want to help a neighbor in need, they’re ready to come pick it up.
