What started as a routine afternoon drive turned into a full-on backup near the I-20/I-30 split east of Benbrook, where a vehicle fire sent thick black smoke into the sky and chaos into the commute.
The incident involved a FedEx truck, and while full details of how it happened are still unclear, the impact was felt across both eastbound and westbound lanes. First responders including Fort Worth Fire units, Engine 34, Truck 35, and law enforcement quickly hit the scene. Tanker 34 was initially dispatched but later called off, and by late afternoon, some of the traffic had begun to thin out.
For a while, traffic maps lit up with delays, leaving drivers stuck and onlookers wondering about the safety of those involved. While no injuries were confirmed by evening, more than one resident commented on the sudden detour their packagesโand their travel plansโhad to take.
If you were heading toward that stretch of highway today and found yourself crawling through it or trying to find a new route altogether, now you know why. As always, best bet is to check your traffic app before getting on the road, especially when smokeโs on the horizon.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for more updates as made available to the public.
