The Benbrook Hawks 13U went into the inaugural Small Town Select Tournament with one goal and came home champions.
The hometown Hawks finished the weekend 4-0, winning their way through pool play before surviving a dramatic semifinal and closing the tournament with a convincing 10-2 championship victory.
Getting there took some grit. The Hawks jumped ahead early in their opener, used an eight-run third inning to take control of Game 2, then rallied from behind in the semifinal before a walk-off hit sent them to the title game.
With the championship on the line, Benbrook broke open an early tie with another eight-run inning. Strong pitching, timely hitting and solid defense, including a key double play, finished the job.
It was a full-team run, from the players and coaches on the field to the families cheering them on in four games, four wins, and one championship.
