Residents in Benbrook’s Winchester Estates neighborhood are noticing a troubling pattern: a growing number of dead squirrels appearing in backyards, particularly near the Westpark Elementary School.
Over the past few weeks, one homeowner has found a new squirrel carcass nearly every week, often in the same part of the yard, with no clear signs of injury.
The cause is unclear, but several possibilities are being considered. One theory suggests that rodent poison, likely intended for mice, unintentionally harms squirrels that come into contact with it. Another, though less likely, is that a disease may be spreading through the local wildlife population. A similar case involving a sick raccoon last year was attributed to a degenerative brain illness, so there is precedent for wild animals falling ill in the area.
For now, the safest course of action is to contact Benbrook Animal Control. They can collect and possibly test one of the squirrels to better understand what’s happening. Residents with pets should avoid handling the animals directly and stay cautious around affected areas.
